In Memory of And Trimuphant Journey Home of a Great Man

Okpuwe Ozo Ohaezue Ozo Okongwu OzoUwa

..the last surving "Ozo gburuichi" in the world is dead at 95"

Okpuwe OzoOhaezue OzoOkongwu OzoUwa (aka: Ozo Ochi-gburugburu) died last Friday evenning November 28, 2003 in Enugu, Nigeria. Papa was 95 years old. He is survived by his wife, childrens, grandchildrens, greatgrandchildrens, brothers and sisters. He had a full good Life.

Papa, a Nigerian with "Ozo" cultural, traditional and "Ozo gbuluichi" beautification markings all over his face from early age, dedicated his life and works to the cause of the down-trodden; an unrelenting champion of democracy, justice and secularism; and a voice that sang the paean of humanity, of equality, of emancipation from pride and prejudice.

Okpuwe OzoOhaezue OzoOkongwu Ozouwa was a Traditionalist and an Ozogbuluichi in the true sense of the word, incorruptible, indomitable and indefatigable in his pursuit for greater goal of love and welfare to fellow-beings. Above all, he was a pristine spirit untainted, untarnished and untouched by the worldly vices of greed, hatred and pettiness. In our modern, political and socio-cultural spheres, his had been a strong presence, scathing in attack against any kind of repression or discrimination, inspirational in grass-root mass movement for greater freedom, and ever vigilant to discern any degree of deviation in the tradition and cultural preservation war values. As OzoOhaezue views and judgement on different social, cultural, political and traditional issues were forthright, so were they unbiased and impartial and thereby revered and acceptable to people.

A pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial great man "iroko tree" that was not fearful of any human but God. To him, what mattered in life is not wealth, but principle, integrity, probity, honour and a good name. Aging but still mentally active, alert as ever. An intellectual in his own right. His acuity of mind, his perspicacity, the lucidity of his thoughts and the orderliness of his presentations in debates and lectures continuously made him a sought-after of a kind. Very generous great man. He gave scholarships, trained, sponsored and groomed many with the little he had. To the less priviledged and the needy, he was their human Advocate.

Okpuwe OzoOhaezue OzoOkongwu Ozouwa's courage and forthrightness won his friends and made enemies too, the former heavily outnumbering the latter.

In Okpuwe OzoOhaezue OzoOkongwu Ozouwa, the deprived and repressed humanity found a guiding spirit steering them through trials and tribulations.

Okpuwe OzoOhaezue OzoOkongwu Ozouwa was a soothing presence in hardship, an inspiration in troubled times and the mentor in moral crises. His death would not change that, for his pristine spirit would burn bright forever in millions of minds in this world.

Okpuwe, Ozo-ochigburugburu, Papa, as he was fondly called by his friends, associates and even his enemies.

He was
- Our Papa,
- Our sunshine,
- Our binding force,
- Our source of inspiration.

May perpetual light shine on Papa and may Papa's gentle soul rest in Peace.
